Frequently ask questions

nesterly is an online community that offers a single, streamlined solution to the dual challenges of neighborhood stability and housing affordability. Our digital interface helps pair established households who have spare bedrooms with those willing to exchange help around the house for lower rent. For instance, a graduate student might move in with an empty-nester, and pay just $700 per month instead of the market rate of $1,000. In exchange for an additional rent reduction, the student might walk the homeowner’s dog a few times per week. With more than 50 million bedrooms sitting empty each night, and many people living in housing that is mismatched to their needs, it’s time for a new approach.

nesterly makes it easy for users to establish task-housing arrangements in just three steps:
1. Both hosts and guests use our friendly profile creator tool to provide pictures of themselves and describe their lifestyle and living expectations. Hosts post the room(s) they are offering and the help they hope to receive in return, and guests list the tasks they are willing to complete in exchange for reduced rent.
2. Users can connect securely within the platform to find the best match for their needs.
3. After finding a match, nesterly’s sample homesharing agreement empowers hosts and guests to easily compose an agreement that describes the rent terms and task exchange

Nope! While we do think that task exchange is an intuitive solution to the burdens of caring for a large home combined with the high cost of rental housing today, we know that everyone has different needs. Accordingly, the task exchange is not a required component of participating in a nesterly homesharing arrangement. As part of the signup process, you are asked to indicate whether or not you’re interested in incorporating tasks into your exchange, so if you don’t want to, simply specify that in your profile to ensure that potential homesharing matches know that and can proceed accordingly..

While there are platforms geared towards homesharing for travel, and sites focused on finding help around the house, there is currently no product that combines the two to help facilitate task-housing arrangements. nesterly is also different in that it occupies the space between short-term vacation stays and long-term rentals, opening up the market for medium-term housing that is so important for students and others who move around frequently.

As nesterly is still in the early days of building our community, we are working hard to learn from our users which criteria make for the best match. Right now, users are free to connect with each other based on location, price, shared backgrounds, etc., with the hands- on support of nesterly staff. Moving forward, we will be building out a matching score algorithm based on what we’ve learned to help narrow down the choices and ensure everyone finds a phenomenal match.

One of the key differentiators between nesterly and our competitors is that nesterly reviews everyone who signs up to ensure we are building a safe, reliable, inclusive, and genuine community. In pursuit of our goal of making homesharing more accessible to people, we verify potential housemates in advance. We do this through the following mechanisms where applicable:
- Address confirmation
- School enrollment verification
- Reference checks
- Skype interviews
- Credit & background checks (for an additional fee)

nesterly was born out of a shared commitment to alleviating the affordable housing crisis and helping older homeowners remain in their homes for as long as possible. Accordingly, our fees are designed to be as low as possible while still ensuring we can offer a stellar level of service and support. You can read more about our low-cost model on our Pricing page.

The affordability crisis is at an all-time high in cities across the country, while the population aged 65+ is expected to double by 2050. By pairing younger renters with established households, we can create new affordable housing at no cost while simultaneously enabling people to comfortably age-in- place.

nesterly is currently running a localized pilot program in partnership with the City of Boston. Our efforts and inventory are focused here at present, but if you’re based elsewhere you can still sign up using the link in the top right corner of the site. We are working around the clock to scale the nesterly model to additional cities and hope to be in your neighborhood soon. If you think your city needs nesterly, let us know via email, Facebook, or Twitter!
